Japan Withdraws Recommendation for HPV Vaccine

The Japanese Health Ministry withdrew HPV Vaccination recommendations for young girls to help prevent cervical cancer because of numerous complaints of side effects. Hundreds of vaccinated girls have complained of long term pain and numbness after receiving the vaccine. While the ministry is not suspending the use fo the vaccination, it has instructed local governments to not promote its use. This withdrawal of immunization recommendation is unusual because it was used regularly by local goverments and is required by law.

Erb's Palsy - Not Just a Child's Problem

Erb's Palsy is an injury to the nerves of the brachial plexus that control the movements of the hand, arm and shoulder. This injury is typically caused by improper pulling on a baby's head during delivery resulting in stretching and sometimes tearing of this nerve bundle. However, Erb's Palsy can also occur to adults who undergo surgical procedures and end up with an inability to raise their arm or use their hand. Injury during surgery can occur when the patient's arm is improperly positioned on the operating table and pressure or stretch is put on the nerve. The brachial plexus can also be injured directly when surgery is performed on the neck and the nerve is cut or severed by scalpel or the use of the electrocautery. Injury can occur if surgeons or nurses inadvertently lean against the patient's arm for a prolonged period of time causing pressure ischemia to the nerves.

Acetaminophen 500 mg instead of aspirin 81 mg was distributed in a lot of Rugby-label enteric coated aspirin and the manufacturer Advanced Pharmaceutical Inc of Holtsville, NY has issued a voluntary recall after receiving a complaint about the mislabeled drug. Lot 13A026 with an expiration date of January 2015 was distributed nationwide. Hydrocodone, Oxycodone and Other Opioid Analgesics are Dangerous

Deaths from hydrocodone, oxycodone and other opioid pain medications have quadrupled since 1999 increasing from 4,030 deaths to 16,651 deaths in 2010. During the amount of opiate pain medications prescribed has quadrupled as well. Pharmaceutical companies and some pain management physicians claim that only a few patients are susceptible to death from overdose and believe that a screening tool can differentiate patients at low risk for overdose from high risk patients. A recent article in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) shows that opioid dependence is more common than believed and affects approximately one-third (1/3) of patients with chronic pain. Simply put, opioid pain relievers, and especially oxycodone and hydrocodone, are dangerous drugs.
